· Changes in brain chemistry-Having abnormal levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin in the brain has also been attributed to mood swings and other forms of mood disorders. Even a slight imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain could result in intense mood changes, anxiety, stress and depression.

· Bipolar disorder-Persons with bipolar disorder are highly vulnerable to mood swings, thanks to the fact that they experience intense mood while reacting to any prevailing situation. Moreover, they find it difficult to adjust their moods to suit the prevailing situations appropriately.

· Drugs and alcohol abuse- alcohol and other drugs such as cocaine are a major cause of mood swings in men and women alike. Drugs have been known to alter the brain chemistry, hence making one vulnerable to it. They can also lead to dramatic swings in mood and extreme reactions to external events.

· Unhealthy diet- consuming excess sugar can lead to fluctuations in blood sugar levels, which is also known to be a leading cause of mood changes

What are some of the symptoms of it?

Foods That Can Literally Make You Happy

It’s important to note that our gut is our second brain so when we take care of it by eating a healthy diet we will feel much better overall. It is estimated that 90% of our serotonin production is in our digestive system so let’s get to feeling happy.

Here are a few of my favourite mood-boosting foods…

Dark chocolate. You may have felt like chocolate made you happier, but now it’s been scientifically proven as well. It’s been shown that eating dark chocolate each day lowers your levels of stress hormones and therefore makes you happier. This isn’t a free pass to eat endless amounts of chocolate, but a little piece won’t hurt – in fact, it could actually help!

Fruits & Veggies. All the nutrients, vitamins and minerals that come from a lifestyle filled with vegetables and fruits allows you to release neurotransmitters that make you happy. Therefore, incorporating this rainbow of food into your life is great for your mood and health.

Fatty fish. The omega 3’s that come from fatty fish like wild salmon and tuna provides your body with the nutrients it needs to feel less stressed, a lot more relaxed and happy. Another benefit of omega 3 is its powerful anti-inflammatory properties. If it helps you reduce pain that’s an added bonus to boost your mood.

Saffron. Have you heard of saffron before? Saffron is a spice from India. Conducted research showed that only a little bit of saffron a day makes serotonin more available to the brain. Saffron has also been shown to help alleviate PMS symptoms.

Along with eating mood-boosting foods, you can also make an effort to exercise on a regular basis for more mood boosting benefits. The endorphins that are released during exercise have a powerful effect that can last the whole day and set you up for success. Another great practice to boost your mood is by keeping a daily gratitude journal. Every day write down at least 3 things you are grateful for and really think deeply about them. Panic Attack: Things to Know

Some of the most common triggers of a panic attack involve everyday situations such as the fear of boarding a flight, getting into a lift or traveling in public transport. Being in a crowded room could also trigger a panic attack. While most people in such a situation and with a panic disorder may feel a sense of discomfort and nausea, some may experience a heightened sense of fear. Apart from the physical symptoms such as palpitations, tense muscles and profuse sweating, an individual may also start feeling unsafe though there may be no real reason to do so.

As a result, such people often try to avoid facing situations that could act as triggers. This could result in them indulging in avoidance tactics and so miss being part of important social functions such as the graduation ceremony of a child or a wedding. Their excessive worry or fear can also isolate them from others who are unable to understand their condition.

During some panic attacks, a person could re-visit a past trauma. Survivors of bombings or public shootings are more likely to experience a flight-or-fight response.

Feeling trapped and how that triggers a panic attack

Some panic attacks can make an individual feel trapped or can be the result of someone feeling that they are trapped. Some of the most common triggers are:

  • Irrational fear of planes: In today’s world, when people are increasingly relying on interconnectivity, the fear of planes can be disadvantageous. A person may refuse to take food or use the toilet in a flight, and sometimes get aggressive and scream.
  • Afraid of a fall: The fear of heights can deter people from climbing escalators or taking an apartment in a tall building. They may avoid adventure activities fearing they may fall to death. Even driving over a water body could trigger a deep sense of fear.
  • Fear of insects: Most insects are harmless and do not attack unless they are harmed first. But that does not prevent people from feeling afraid of them. The unexplained fear of spiders is one such instance and is fairly common.
